Telangana 37: Let’s Andhraize Telangana

When Europeans occupied continents of South America, Asia, Africa as their colonies, they thought they were carrying the ‘white man’s burden’. They thought they had a divine mandate as a White Christian to civilize the barbarians and the natives. The white man justified the colonialism as just and fair means to educate and civilize the natives of these colonies.

In 1956, when Andhras sought to merge with Telangana to form Andhra Pradesh, they were carrying the same legacy of Europeans that ruled them. They were now carrying ‘Andhra man’s burden’. They sought to Andhraize Telanganas to purify Telangana Telugu from the onslaught and influence of Urdu. They wanted to set an example and teach Telanganas what pure and chaste Telugu is all about. They introduced their version of Telugu to us in our text books and called our Telugu Vikruti, an abomination, an anomaly, that needs to be rectified and corrected.
Here is how some Andhras have written about Telangana Telugu on this blog.

Since my Telugu is not bastardized with Urdu words. It has much more pure Dravidian pronunciation of certain syllables and hence makes the language sound sweet and mellifluous. At least teach your kids good Telugu and not the gutter Telangana slang.

…you have to accept that Telangana Telugu is a corrupted version of Telugu, corrupted not by you or your ancestors, but by the great Nizam.

As long as Telangana Telugu is corrupted with Urdu words, Telangana Telugu will remain as a symbol of Telugu people oppression under Nizam.

If you want to fight, fight with the history and remove the Urdu words from Telangana Telugu to make it pure and free from Nizam oppression' reminder.

Andhra Telugu is pure Telugu whether u accept or not. Even though they were with Madras they were not affected by Tamilians.

Assalu ee telangana culture ante yemiti?? Nizam gaadi paalanalo, Urdhu chetha telugu ni rape chesthe vacchindhe telangana baaasha, anthena?? [Actually what is Telangana Culture? Under Nizam’s rule, when Telugu was raped by Urdu what we got is Telangana language, is it not?]

Andhra janaalaki intha kaalam, telangana baasha gurinchi antha theliyadhu, intha kaalam adhi kudaa teluge anukunnaam [Till today, Andhra people didn’t know about Telangana language. Andhras thought it was also Telugu]

Why do you want to be with us?

You don’t respect us, you don’t respect our language. You have an extremely low opinion of Telangana people and their language. And yet, you fight for a ‘united state’ forcing and coercing us into submission so that we remain with you against our will. Why do you want to be with us with you when you have absolutely no understanding of Telangana or its people, when you think that our culture and language is a bastardized, raped, and corrupted version of Telugu while you maintain that you have a pure culture?

Andhraize

Your words to describe your efforts to civilize us reek of Aryan supremacy theories propounded in Europe during early 1900s and under Nazism. When you colonized Telangana did you really think that you could Andhraize Telangana? Make us civilized and less impure?

You did all you could for nearly 53 years to make us feel ashamed of our language, and yet we defied all your attempts.
We refused to purify our language according to your tastes. We refused to concede our language is a shame.

Instead, we took pride in our history and culture, whether it included oppression or not, whether we were raped or not, whether it is corrupted or not. At the end of the day, this is what we speak- this is the language we feel comfortable with. This is the language we express ourselves in. This is the language that brought us revolutionary songs to inspire us the take on the rule of Nizam then and the rule of Andhras now. This is the language of our plight, our sorrows, our experiences, our suppression, and also our pride.

Why do you even like Hyderabad?

Sometimes I don’t even understand why you like Hyderabad.
It has its own cosmopolitan culture into which you don’t fit into at all. You are fairly homogenous group and have absolutely no cosmopolitan character. All cosmopolitan cities inherit influences from various regions, various religions, and various languages, whereas you try to keep your language and culture pure protecting it from all outside influences. How does that make it cosmopolitan?

In Hyderabad, we speak differently. We use the words like ‘Jaldi raa’ easily mixing Urdu and Telugu whenever we feel like. We take pride in such mixing. We are not ashamed of it. You find yourself strangers in this city and in this region when you try stick to your purist theories.

You have never attempted to understand us, our culture and our history. Yes, we have a checkered past with Nizam and the legacy of Muslim rule, but those are our problems and we have our own solutions. You have absolutely no idea how to address them and when you try to give solutions, you actually make a joke of yourself. You have many misconceptions about us and our history. We don’t want to overthrow the legacy of Nizam or the influence of Urdu on our language. We are quite happy with our language the way it is.

We play Holi and fly kites, we have our distinct ways of celebrating our festivals which are quite secular in nature. We have peerilu where both Hindus and Muslims participate in a joint celebration. The reason why Hyderabad has become famous and developed is mostly because of its openness in embracing all cultures and languages. It has embraced you as well without putting up a fight. However, your attempts to make it purely Telugu city are now rejected. Your attempts to monopolize it for only Telugu people are now rejected.

Your attempts to Andhraize Hyderabad or Telangana are rebuffed. Your sermons fall on deaf ears. It’s high time you understand that.

Nazi Theories

Your attempts to keep your culture and language pure are synonymous with Nazi ideologies. Telangana people are quite comfortable with mixing. Telangana people are a mixed culture, we have influences from many regions, those of Kannada and Maratha, and many of them have cross-border relations with those regions. We have Gujaratis, Tamils, Punjabis, Marathas, Kannadas, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians amidst us. Each of them has influenced us which we have accepted quite openly.

Two different versions of our state

Once again Andhras and Telangana differ on what Andhra Pradesh means to us. For Andhras, it is all about keeping Telugu pure and chaste, keep it Hindu, away from other languages and religions, and keep it a protected region away from other influences. For Telanganas, it is all about mixing, evolving, and embracing new cultures and new influences without having to worry about impurities. We are proud of our biryani and our sakinaalu without having to think whether it is authentic Telugu or Hindu. We will continue to embrace others as long as they don’t impose themselves onto us.

It’s clear that we have completely two different views of our state. We don’t want to be pure like you. We believe that languages evolve, that cultures evolve, that they embrace influences without having to resist them. We do not think there is a pure version and impure version for a language. We are not making attempts to enforce our language onto anyone. Instead we are sick and tired of being imposed by Andhras who have colonized us trying to impose their version of purity onto us.

This is high time we rejected this experiment called Andhra Pradesh. We are two different people and have different view on what this Andhra Pradesh meant to us. You can be the torch bearers of pure Telugu. We are open to the influences. This is high time Telangana is its own so that its identity, however impure or corrupt, is given its voice and expression.

  1. One sincere request to all my "United Andhra" friends, please don't post comments and make this blog popular. There is no necessity to blog here as per my insider info, the issue of telangana is kept in cold storage for next 5 yrs. At the end of this year, the congress party will make a telangana leader as CM of AP, and close this telangana issue forever.

So, my dear 'United Andhra' friends, don't lose your cool here by reading this hatred filled telangana fundamentalist's blog. Many telangana fundamentalists in this blog will intentionally provoke you to get more hits and comments, its a way of popularizing their fundamentalist blog. Let them bark forever, who cares!!

  4. Dear Anonymous,
Before you say anything regarding the provocations sujai is making, open your materialistic mind and go through all of his 37 posts related to the telangana.
You will see how sujai tried to first analysed the issue from both sides and then gave a very fair explanation of the need of separate telangana state.
He very much effectively answered every question andhra and the samaikhyandhra proponents have been waging since then.
Glimpses of the andhra commentators who have been abusing the telangana culture is what you think provoking then who must be provoked first? Telangana or Andhra?
Fundamentalism is quite a different scenario. Here Sujai is proposing a mixing of cultures to sustain telangana culture. Whereas andhra people are trying die hard to keep their culture pure by abusing other cultures and languages.
So who should be the first proponents of separation?
    Don't you see the contradiction?
This is sheer hypocricy and double standards on part of andhra people.
Telangana people welcome all cultures and people to mix and live with them. But we at the same time are in dire need to loosen out from bureacratic and political domination of fundamentalist andhra who do not allow us to live our own way and trying to impose on our culture.

  5. On what Andhra Pradesh means to Andhra:

For the politicians and power brokers: land grabbing (sez, film cities, etc), settling land deals, numerous scams (see todays scam of 15000 crores - coal in karimnagar)

Andhra upper class: buy (loan rather) an apartment, twist and extract a few crore dowry - showing said apartment in Hyd

  6. Anand.. thanks for the list. Malgudi and Bix are two more you can add to the list. You and Vinay have been terrific recent additions. You have a lot of information and provide new perspective on Hyderabad.

Also, it is very important for us to remember that there will never be a way to convince Andhras.

While we are worried about poor people, Andhras concern is always about their properties in Hyd and losing their rights of exploitation. These opposites cannot be reconciled.

    ReplyDelete
  7. To above,
    "rights of exploitation"
to andhra people's self declared "right to exploitation"
Wonderful concept and how real it is.

  8. Read about 15000 crore scam in your Karimnagar. This is todays news.

AP Genco awarded contract to extract coal to YS Jagan and another ministers sons company at 2499/tonne for 20 years. This is more than double the rate at which it purchases the same grade coal.

Non-violence will not work for these bastards. They need to be stoned to death. Only then they will stop the nonsense of "Telugudanam, samaikyandhra, telugu-kutumbam, oka talli garbham lo biddalam" and budge.

Once again you have shown your hatred for Andhra people and i guess there are substantial number of people like you in Telangana. You know this is the very reason why Telangana should not be given. No Andhra person who is residing in Telangana state will be safe.

I am going ignore rhetorics like colonalism ,Nazis etc.

//You don’t respect us, you don’t respect our language. You have an extremely low opinion of Telangana people and their language.//

Now is there a statistical proof for that or is it just expression of your hatred .

//You are fairly homogenous group and have absolutely no cosmopolitan character.//

Once again rhetorical and spewing venom.

//We play Holi and fly kites//

Do you think Andhra people dont play Holi and dont fly kites? Anyway never thought before that you have to play Holi or fly a kite to be called cosmopolitan

Individually they are nice people, but I found most of them as ignorant of other cultures. This was almost 20 years ago. I am not sure if the culture has changed now in that part AP, but some of the first encounters of my Andhra classmates made these comments:

    1. Anybody who speaks Hindi is a Muslim.
    2. Holi is a Muslim festival.
    3. Why do you watch Hindi movies and listen to Hindi songs on radio?
    4. Where is Karimnagar?
    5. Do you have any rivers in Telangana?

I have some alternate solution for Telangana issue. All center has to do, is announce a new capital as andhra city (e.g. Vizag or Vijayawada) for current AP. Build some infrastructure in next 2 or 3 years. I think Andhra people won't say NO to this.
Center has to announce separate Telangana state after that with Hyderabad as its capital.

I am not sure why are you taking the pain of fighting for a statehood. We should up the ante and demand for a separate country. Don't you think the goals and objectives for Telangana are better achieved by having a country of its own than a state. Do you think after a new state is formed, the andhra lobby will stop plundering and exploiting telangana region and if challenged cannot win the courts of law by their money and muscle power. I guess not.

Let us take each of the objectives you have put on the sticker

Jobs: As an independent nation, jobs can be prioritized for citizens. (No murky mulki business). All Settlers will be allowed to continue working as long as they have a temporary work visa. Systematically the work carried by settlers can be transitioned to citizens as their visas expire. This will ensure the citizens get first preference for local jobs.

Water: Sharing of waters with India can be agreed upon and will have the writ to build dams, reservoirs without having to deal with gross power imbalances that exist today in the state of Andhra.

Self Respect: As a new republic, people of TG will have more say because they are electing representatives for their own country. They do not have to deals with state-centre dynamics. This will ensure them of self-rule. Being an independent nation, language can be made homogenous with Telagana as official language (Raja Bhaasha). There will be no prakruti or vikruti and will ensure Self-Respect. No one can dare to look down at the people of telangana. TG will be a free country will get a UN membership and any disputes like sharing of river waters, exporting coal and energy can be settled at UN instead of Indian courts. The Indian judiciary was never kind to the aspirations of telangana people. Why stay with the union and be treated as second class citizens.

Electricity: Being a separate country, the power generated at Kothagudem will be all your, Singareni collieries will generate revenue for TG only.

Security: Although the new country will need its own armed forces for defending itself and thwart the advances of India, Pakistan and China are not that far and I am sure they will be more than willing to help the new nation.

In fact, there are many more benefits that you can derive being a separate nation than a state in the Indian union.

    To my Dear Friend,

Didn't your insider info enlighten you on the fact that Telangana will be kept in HOT HOT HOT storage for the next zillion years ? The sole reason being the current generation (teens and youngsters) are seeing the agitation in its peak form and there is no way they will let it die down for the simple reason being they are now 'EDUCATED EDUCATED AND MORE EDUCATED' than ever before. They for sure are well ahead on the information about problems plaguing telangana unlike their "one generation ahead" telangana brothers who knew nothing coz of lack of facts and figures that should have been brought out.

I had the same thought for quite a long time. I have some comments on this topic thoiugh.

The very fact that there are so many people settled and assimilated in Telangana, not just in Hyderabad but all other Telangana districts ( andhras, gujaratis, marwaris, sikhs, sindhi's etc) says a lot of about the openness about the people of Telangana.

If a capital is built in either in Vijayawada or Vizag or Kurnool there won't be such an environent. Coastal Andhra amd Seema are more closely resemble tamilnadu than Telangana. There will be lot of telugu chavinism.

We Telanganas have already put lot of hard work, now why not go for the kill and demand a separate nation?
I can think of a few 'valid' reasons in support of that. The new nation of Telangana will be bigger in area than some 40 nations. Bigger than many nations of eastern Europe and the island nations of French Polynesia. It has a population greater than some 70 nations. Its GDP is greater than some 20 assorted nations of Subsaharan Africa, poorest parts of central America like Haiti etc. It is also not entirely unprecedented for a nation to be geographically surrounded entirely by another nation. See Lesotho.
Telangana people are also culturally different from rest of India. If you look into their genetic makeup, one can clearly observe that they possess the cosmopolitan gene that is entirely absent in neighboring Andhras. Also, the gene variation of greed is totally lacking in Telanganas, but can be predominantly found in the surrounding Seemandhras.
Even historically we are different people. In Mahabharatha, we supported Pandavas whereas neighboring Andhras supported Kauravas. Link here.
We can also bolster our cause by doctoring our history. A little bit of tweaking is certainly ok when we are fighting for such a lofty cause.

    Jai Telangana.

  45. @ 32, Manohar:

Thanks for trying to make a case for a separate nation for Telangana. However, this suggestion from you is unwarranted and completely unasked for. As and when needed, Andhras have offered their help which we Telanganas have rebuffed. Yet, they don’t seem to understand this. How long will it take for you to understand that we completely and overwhelmingly don’t like to take suggestions, help or advice from you?

We Telanganas have already put lot of hard work, now why not go for the kill and demand a separate nation?

Telanganas wish to remain in India but do not wish to be with Andhras. If Andhras are given a nation of their own it would actually benefit all of us Indians. ;-) We will all be saved from their imperialistic designs. Otherwise, now it is the turn of poor Rayalseema people to suffer.

Telangana people are also culturally different from rest of India. If you look into their genetic makeup, one can clearly observe that they possess the cosmopolitan gene that is entirely absent in neighboring Andhras.

First you say that Telanganas are different from rest of India, and then you suddenly equate rest of India only with Andhras. What happened there in your logic? Missed a step or two.

I never said that Indians lack cosmopolitan character, its only Andhras who don’t only in comparison with Telanganas. Since you claim that Andhras are unique and different from the rest of us of Indians, doesn’t it make a better case for Andhras to be a separate nation? ;-)

Also, the gene variation of greed is totally lacking in Telanganas, but can be predominantly found in the surrounding Seemandhras.

You seem to be going in the right path with your thinking. You are only making a case for a separate nation for Andhras. Keep going. ;-)

Even historically we are different people. In Mahabharatha, we supported Pandavas whereas neighboring Andhras supported Kauravas.

More the reason for Andhras to create a separate nation.

Something wrong with the way your comment turned out. You start with the premise proposing nation for Telanganas but your entire argument is making a case of Andhras.

As a final word, your attempts at sarcasm are downright puerile. You have to do much better if you want a response from me next time.

Idiot, you are good for nothing. If you have **** go and establish an industry in private sector and provide jobs to telangana people, rather than crying like a widow.

*cry like a loser for lack of competitive skills and blame everythng on andhras

*always depend on those govt. jobs, so that he can use his caste based reservation for job and not on merit

    *think like a naxalite, anti-establishment, anti-capitalism, anti-globalization, anti-nationalist

*basically they don't know how to compete with andhras and use hatred to cover up their weakness

*eventhough nizam screwed them, they love nizam but hate andhras

*most of these guys want real estate in Hyd to crash, so that they buy properties for dirt cheap

*in JAC, most of the students from OU and KU are from arts/degree colleges (not professional engg. colleges), where they don't study and stay in the hostels forever...these guys anyways don't find jobs in private sector for their degress....so join this movement for timepass and money

  59. Folks,

Looks like the Telangana opposition has lost on all fronts. Hence the quality of comments here have degraded to de-glamorizing the idea, the topic posted as well as the entire movement for freedom of Telanganas from Andhra supremacy.

The discussions in Assembly and parliament houses turn violent with throwing mikes at each other when:

    1. The Opposition has nothing valid left to say.
    2. The opposition is bankrupt intellectually.
    3. The opposition cannot buy valid time from the floor leaders or the speaker to say anything worthwhile, except vent their frustration.

Un-parliamentary language pours out when one group has nothing worthwhile to oppose an idea but to shout and litter.

The Samaikyandra supporters on this blog have proven over and over again, in all the 37 blog-post discussions that when they have nothing worthwhile left to say, they retort to de-glamorizing the T-supporters, go for personal attacks calling them naxals and insulting them saying they cannot compete.

Here is some info for all you folks out there pouring filth and litter on this blog... Your future employers not only in India but also in USA are reading these posts as well as comments.

When you refer to each others history, the neutral English readers find it ridiculously funny that the slaves of an old british colony are calling the subjects of an autocrat bas*****... while the whole world is witness to how British colonies were managed and how the 'dogs and IN**** not allowed' attitude was taken pride in.

Stop the nonsense of throwing litter on history. History stands for itself. No amount of maligning or re-writing it can change anything about the past of Telangana or Andhra regions.

What can truly change is FUTURE.

ONLY if you guys are ready for it.

Grow up. Stop littering. Start planning on what you guys want to see in the future... start working with your policy makers and your elected representatives on the vision and mission for the next few yrs. Be active with good reason, thought and more importantly take pride in your actions for future... not the remote-past of nizam rule or british rule.

Potti Sri Ramulu's death has been used and abused many times over by Telugu people. Enough of using the death card or the sacrifice card... you've cashed more insurance on that one dead-body than the Entire nation did on Gandhi. Grow some brains if possible... else, learn to argue like adults.

  60. I work for a company in US... My company has a branch in Hyderabad and my boss was interested in knowing whats going on in the India branch. He is doing his research online... and i know for a fact that he follows this blog too.

Folks, even someone living in a different continent could read from the discussions that one region (Andhra) has literally colonized another minority region (Telangana) and they want to squeeze out every last drop of water and penny from Telangana before they leave.

Infact, the open discussion in the board meetings was along the lines of how one region could totally dominate all aspects of business of a state and make it their legitimate right to upper-hand in everything.

I am from the Andhra region and I found this kind of conclusions from neutral by-standers rather insulting. Guys, please maintain some quorum and behave decently. If you have any valid statistics, post them. Put up logical arguments. Any amount of personal attacks or twisting-history will not give us any edge over the Telangana movement.

The outsiders look at it as a 'freedom struggle' and quite honestly, they are very fascinated that it has been a non-violent struggle of 5 decades, where lives were laid, but not a single life taken.

I honestly feel dejected that Andhras as a group lost out morally and ethically in this battle. Kindly be logical in your debates and be empathetic to Telanganas before it is too late.

  61. To all Samaikya-andhra-proponents on this blog:

Around 30 Telangana students and supporters have committed suicides over the past one month. Do you guys know what it takes for someone to be pushed to that help-less state of suicide?

There were 1800 attempts to fast-unto-death, all across the region.

Every yr, according to official govt. statistics, around 2500 poor Telangana farmers commit suicide, unable to pay off the bank loans from a dry crop.

Andhras and Seemas, please dont use the arguments that there is 'backwardness' in every region.

There are alarmingly scary and moving stories in Telangana that your media will never publish.

The tribals of Telangana CANNOT survive for a single day if their only known 'way-of-life' is attacked. Thousands of such tribals were pushed into lost world of civilization without adequate education or other opportunities.

It is not 'great' to call yourselves 'competent' against the tribals. SHAME ON YOU! Shame on you to call yourselves any better...

The Polavaram project is a shame on Andhras and the state govt. of Andhra Pradesh.

Work is being planned on this project going against the environment boards, against the Supreme Court direction... The State Govt. of AP has, in the past 2 months, encroached on the 'right to freedom of expression' and many other constitutional rights of peaceful protesters.

There is such a strong case for formation of Telangana... that WORLD BANK MAY DENY ANY LOANS TO AP STATE FOR A FEW DECADES BASED ON THE LEVEL OF CORRUPTION, INEQUALITY AND BOOK-COOKING CULTURE.

I wouldn't be surprised if Manmohan's govt. is forced by World bank to create economically and politically justified administrative structures that will safeguard people's rights.

Continued T-state agitations are not going to win Andhras or Indians any awards in the international arena.

When something goes wrong in Hyderabad... as small as a bandh for a day... the whole world knows of it.

The media in your pockets is of no use now... it can only help you drink milk like a cat closing its own eyes.

As far as information is concerned.... Telangana struggle has reached far and wide.

  62. I ended up with a helpless smile and a sigh after going thru the comments.
If some one accuses you of 'something', you try to defend your self by arguing with him logically, give a differnet perspectie and show him that his angle is not correct.
Lo!There is a different approach now. You intensify that 'something' and pound on them with it to counter them.
You take all the pains to explain that they dont respect your language and they come up with more abuses on your language. If you say 'You grabbed our jobs which were rights given to us by judiciary systems', they say 'you are incompetent fools, so you dont have the right for that job'.
It definitely shows the world what we are talking about and proves our case.

There is an interesting bit about the Telangana language. There are two componenets.Even if you take out the Urdu, Kannda, Marathi influences, the repository of daily used words is huge and there is a beautiful phrase for every occassion and occurance of life. For instance we use 'Manchigunnadi' instead of 'Bagundi'. Like this we have lot of words. It is an earthly language which could beautifully express the deep feelings of the sons of earth.
Having said that Im not trying to give a sancity to my language and potray it as the purest and best.

  63. To all those telangana extremists on this blog:

Did all the telangana people woke up suddenly after the death of YSR and started agitations for telangana state?

What would have happenned to telangana movement had TRS party was not formed?

What would have happenned to telangana movement had KCR was politically employed in TDP party?

Where is the proof that telangana movement was natural and continuous for the last 50 yrs? Show me one incident of visible telangana agitation after 1969.

Read all the blog posts on this blog, and tell me who is frustrated and desperate, telangana vested interests or andhra vested interests? When the posts on the blog are itself filled with so much hatred towards andhras, how can you expect sweet comments from self-respecting andhras.

It is a shame when all bloggers and vested interests are hyping this movement from nothing to a huge crisis. Where were this domodar reddy, jana reddy, nagam janardhan reddy etc all these years. Domodar reddy/Jana Reddy both were fired from their political jobs by YSR. Don't you see that this entire telangana movement after YSR death is being led by politically unemployed leaders.

How much effort is needed by KCR and Co, to instigate students and other groups, using filthy abusive language on andhras, and you term it telangana agitation.

Your telangana leaders are happily instigating attacks on telugu film industry, pharma/IT industry, all in the name of telangana self-respect.

In a civilized democratic society, kcr will be called a cheat/fraud for doing a fake fast-unto death to create a drama. this entire telangana agitation created after YSR death is filmsy and hollow, it was created out of an opportunity to take advantage of the leadership crisis in AP, and nothing natural about this movement at this time.

The current fake telangana agitation is nothing compared to the intensity and seriousness of 1969 agitation. Even after such a intense 1969 agitation, telangana state didn't materialise. Do you think this time with this superficial fake agitation, telangana state will materialize without resistance??

On one hand you spread hatred towards andhras, and on the other hand ask for separation as good brothers.......untill there is a trust between two parties, state of AP will not bifurcate. Your minds are already filled and saturated with hatred towards andhras from 50 yrs, but the common telangana man has no problem if YSR like leader exists to provide administration and welfare to them. In fact majority of the people who died out of shock hearing YSR's death news are from telangana. I strongly doubt the support of common telangana man for this current fake agitation.

PVN was a CM for a very short amount of time... but, in those few months... he fully implemented the mulki rules... which the Andhra lobby hated...

He was all set to enforce the land reforms laws.... which your choudhury-kamma guys hated...

He was an honest minister and intelligent and finding fault-lines in policies leading to corruption... which... ALL MLAs hated.

PVN is a legend. You are enjoying the life you are... because of his reforms.

YSR is the only congress CM to get mandate twice consecutively. YSR got the best mandate for his welfare schemes in telangana in 2009 elections. YSR is a true mass leader. As long as YSR was alive, there is no telangana movement or sentiment, because YSR crushed all the evil unemployed telangana congress leaders and crooked kcr gang.

  106. OOh boy looks there was quite a bashing on the blog y’day…hmm missed it.

You know form where this separate country/nation started…

During one of those bandh’s, a reporter asked poor TG illiterate women protestor why are you agitating (I remember it was rail roko in Warangal)…here goes her reply:

    siru ma Telangana “Desam” kosam…

that one word “desam” has put this blog under fire … man find and file POTA against her.

Here goes some more cheer up bro’s:

    Dasha and Disha of HMTV:

Do you really think this debate is on state separation…naah I don’t think so…

    1) Dalit’s ire against the upper castes on Karamchedu
    2) Muslim minorities ire against the Andhra intellectual for protecting or supporting Tasleema
    3) In Vizakh it’s Northern Andhra dist backwardness ( Srikakulam etc)
    4) In Tirupati Rayalaseema backwardness…

    5) Hyderabad is burning…TRS has suppressed right to speak (i.e United) funny part is, in Andhra region debate if anyone talks (even whispers) about “separate” he is shown exit door with wild protests, poor Murthy (moderator) has to call for famous words on TV i.e ‘ll cont after break ( this is the only time where TV guys can make some money, more the breaks, more money)

    6) One “medhavi” (don’t remember his name, how can I there are 100’s of speaker(s) and I am sure HMTV will get a place in Guinness book of records for holding longest debates) this “medhavi” bought volumes of data, and out of it he picked one page and before that he said TG people are asking to give “one good reason for united compared to 100’s of reason TG claims”, believe me I was holding my breath, finally he reads out like this “page x and para num y” ( funny part is some TG folks on dais started opening or looking whatever documents or books they were holding )

Medhavi reads out “The state merger was done with the acceptance of both the region leaders in 1956 “

What!!! Man he really took me for ride for a few minutes I was really hopping this guy has something to presentw, was in impression he’ll bring out a some letter like Burugala’s to Congress head which is floating around…

Hyderabad badsha or king ( Asad Bhai…elder Owaisi) is going around the offices requesting (usually he threatens) to ban three most famous words that are floating around “separate”, “united” and importantly “settler”. Why ???

In worst case if BJP comes to power in TG, Muslims will be moved from “minority” to “setters” , since BJP can point that “turkolu” mean people from Turkey…visionary leader of Muslim community with this he his guaranteed to win all coming elections and poor Andhra’s are thinking he his supporting united…

    On Chiranjivi:
Chiranjivi is bitting nails and breaking his head, In last one year I have acted in quite a few movies with multi roles (max any hero can do nowdays is two) starting with launching party in Tirupati, election campaign, loosing elections, YSR tragedy, best scripted sympathy on TG with a twist to United, sold rights for Tamil version i.e meeting in Delhi with Chidambaram...quite a bit of job without a break but million $ question is why all they are not released for Sankrantri in line with other big movies…man somebody tell him he became MEGA START of SMALL SCREEN, every day his movie(s) are on TV for free viewing !!!

    On KCR:
Poor and tired looking KCR was on Zee TV for three hours, there is nothing new he could offer for TG callers and irony is it was other way, callers took over his slogan Jai TG, we are active and day n night we are in agitations, will sacrifices our lives for TG, some say either you be in front some you be in back, we devised plans to teach Congress a lesson if they don’t resign…man complete U turn from people, in contrast to what Andhras think or assume, today KCR has became jobless.

Rest he spent explaining to Andhra callers, that he’ll lay red carpet (warning of bureaucracy hurdles) for investors from Andhra, with a very warm and soft tone (can he really do that) give comfort to settlers ( man I hate this word let’s replace with commonly used Andhrolu ) taking ref of Kyasts, Marathi, Kanadigas etc ( even after Lady of Andhra Sanapaneni Rajkumari screaming many times over and over choodandi mamilini evaro Kyasts anta vallatho compare chestadu….) also there is quite a crowd near TG Bhavan after the show, why? KCR had repeatedly said in the show that he made plans for new TG asked rep from BC, Dalit’s, Minority (triumph card for politicians ) and specially business people to visit TG Bhavan to share his plans on reservation etc…You Andhras are really smart you made him jobless.

One more man just cannot stop…saw some comments saying WHITE BOSS is watching…one comment like that has stopped bashing…AMZAING just cannot appreciate power and fear of PINK SLIPS …what we can learn from that comment…time to bring back or involve WHITES in negotiations…someone please ask KPMG or DELOITEE to QUOTE for advisory services on the state separation issue…for sure these companies will not quote less than few billion dollars…see business and job opportunities from the TG issue and finally put a condition saying only locals should be hired…include this as part of package for Andhra’s i.e setting up the company or work centers in new capital city…whole issue of Hyderabad is solved.

  109. Proud telugu you say,
PVN has failed badly as CM of AP. Go and check out the history.

Actually PVN was the best CM any state would have got. He started AP Residential Schools(the local experiment before his well known Navodaya Schools). He started the land reforms before any state had implemented them. He also was strictly implementing 6 point formula.
Ans the last two reasons were the main itchy points for the factionist dora(feudal lords) of rayalseema and andhra. They unleashed bigotry on the name of Jai Andhra to overthrow him and the formula. Look at the telugu news papers of 1972-73, you will see how you guys ill treated that great person. What did YSR do after his death? Not even able to lobby for arranging a respectful ceremony in ND for an ex-PM.
IF it was not you who overthrew this great person as AP CM then AP would have seen golden days longback. And I am sure PVN was as a United AP proponent believed in his own ability as CM to make telangana develop on par with AP.(and today no telangana person would have asked for separation)
You andhra guys duped him for your selfish vested interests and to continue your exploitation of telangana.

    And,
Great leaders are not judged on how hypocrite and corrupt a person can become, but rather than how much one can develop in his tenure. You just can come up with one Arogyasri padhakam supporting YSR(and do you know who benefitted more with that ? the corporate hospitals that just compelled we tax payers to pay excess fees for minor treatments of poor people)

You are taking digs at JP , why because he is not actively supporting Telangana.

He has a view point that "Backwardness is everywhere.Unless we change our leaders and officers nothing will change"

He has stats to prove his view point. He quoted in a TV9 program , Human development index stats of 1997 ,district wise stats where there were many coastal districts in top 10 backward districts.

And he is not against Telangana also. He is just against reasons like looting , backwardness, selective neglect. His view is clear all leaders looted their resective regions. That is the only equality in India. To him creating Telangana is only a administrative decision.

He is the only leader who had the courage to say that 'sky will not fall on Andhra people if Telangana is created and 'Telangana will not become heaven by the creation of Telangana state.'

If a telangana state is created ,lets say by this year end. Can you tell me in how many years the backwardness of Telangana will be removed as per your estimate?

Now I don't know why andhra people are fighting? whether they fear falling skies or loosing their "right to exploit"
    And regarding courage-
JP is the most frivolous coward who fears answering the straight forward question "whether he supports samaikhyandhra or separate telangana"
And to say his words one does not need courage,

In your devotion and dedication for JP narayan, the white-collar-turned-criminal, you fail to notice that it takes 'indifference' and not 'courage' to say the above lines.

His 'indifference' is for his own political survival. No one in Kukatpally will vote for him if he speaks for Telangana... and no one in Telangana will vote for him if he speaks against Telangana. Being someone with less than 5 fingers to count for seats in assembly, he has very little to hope for.... and hence... a lot to say... to grab attention.

They are as much oblivious to understand what is democracy, capitalism, socialism or communism(and its derivatives),as they are ignorant of telangana history and cultur.
Well our preamble strictly says India is a socialist, secular and democratic nation.
When I said PVN Rao has started land reforms to curb exploitation by feudal lords some bum figures it out as a naxalite vis-a-vis maoist ideology.
Where as PVN Rao was as democratically elected CM, Maoists jsut wage war against democracy with arms. Their main agenda is to achieve agrarian power through arms and war. They do not believe in the system of democracy.

Here is just a little bit of evidence on small states. What proof do you have regarding large states?

Empirical evidence from the recently minted small states and similarly sized states:

Amazingly, all three new states have grown fabulously fast. Uttarakhand has averaged 9.31% growth annually, Jharkhand 8.45%, and Chattisgarh 7.35%. All three states belong to what was historically called the BIMARU zone, a slough of despond where humans and economies stagnated. Out of this stagnant pool have now emerged highly dynamic states. - TimesOfIndia

Ranking of states on human and social development indicators: Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttaranchal are the largest states. All these are smaller than Telangana, except Gujarat.

"At the Diamond States Awards, basic tenets prevail. Small is beautiful, inclusive growth will take you to the top."

"Small states show how large investments and focus on key issues can improve outcomes." -- OutlookIndia

Smaller states are "conceptually better governed," says George Mathew, director, Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) in the national capital. The institute regularly undertakes field studies and, Mathew says, Andhra Pradesh "was not progressing as expected" in the field of governance. In that context, he says, Telangana is a good step

Small states are more sound fiscally: "Larger states like Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Punjab have not made much headway, smaller ones like Chattisgarh, Sikkim, Kerala and Goa have shown continuous improvement." - Business Standard

"Small is beautiful" was the message from the first India Today ranking of states. In some form or the other, the message comes out of every year's study quite compellingly. One obvious reason is that the study lays equal emphasis on spread and level of development. And by measuring performance on most factors in per capita terms, the adequacy of a public service is assumed to be as important as its availability. - India Today

"Continuing his arguments for better leadership to govern India, Mohan Guruswamy now turns his attention to the size and composition of the States in India and comes to the conclusion that in the matter of good and manageable states "small is beautiful". In his opinion our states and state governments are too large and unwieldy to be governed properly." - Making India Governable - Mohan Guruswamy, chairman of Centre for Policy Alternatives, a public policy think tank working on policy issues in India.

Across India’s 28 states and its UTs, work co-authored with Laveesh Bhandari shows smaller states perform better than larger states — on an average. Small states perform better than large states on physical infrastructure, social infrastructure, law and order and anti-poverty programmes. Indian Express

The case for small States can be argued with two parameters of macroeconomic statistics from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The first parameter is the percentage increase in Gross Domestic Product for States between 1999-2000, when the smaller States were created, and 2007-2008. India’s overall GDP increased by 75 per cent during this time period. During the same period, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttaranchal recorded more than 100 per cent, 150 per cent and 180 per cent increase respectively. These rates were much above the rate at which national GDP increased. This clearly indicates that the recent creation of smaller States was a step in the right direction.

Before making any more comments, do post your literature on how large states are better!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Here are the views of Srivatsa Krishna who is a Harvard MBA and an Indian Administrative Service officer.

Do small states really make better ones :

It is assumed ex ante, without any causal evidence, by several political leaders that smaller states make for better governance and superior economic performance. But does a Telangana being carved out of Andhra Pradesh (AP) automatically mean lesser transmission and distribution losses, and therefore, better electricity availability? Would a smaller state automatically improve attendance of school teachers and doctors in the villages? Would it automatically rein in the burgeoning fiscal deficit of state governments? We often tend to confuse a smaller state with greater local participation and thus greater accountability in the delivery of services, which may or may not be the case.

Also, a smaller state does not always mean a smaller government. In fact, at least in the short and medium term, the cost of administration will increase, for one would be duplicating a lot of the existing systems and resources in the new state. Thus, instead of “administrative convenience”, what one should be looking at is “administrative necessity”. What is the smallest and most effective size of government to deliver growth and development? Interestingly, there is no evidence in economic literature which consistently proves that government failure is costlier than market failure to the economic performance of a state. As such, it is facile to conclude a priori that a smaller or a bigger government is necessarily superior or inferior to the market, or vice versa. What has been seen to consistently matter is the quality of government intervention, and it is debatable whether this improves with the size of government or with the quality of leadership, as such evidence is still nascent and mixed.

What does the economic evidence and the data point to? The five poorer states of Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Rajasthan, with 40% of India’s population, produce only 25% of the national output, while India’s five richest states of Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab and Tamil Nadu, with around 25% of the population, produce 40% of the national output. International Monetary Fund research indicates that the richest states (such as Punjab) grew three-four times faster than the poorest states (such as Bihar) between 1970 and 2005. Interestingly, the Gini coefficient of per capita consumption is also the highest for Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra (between 0.35 and 0.4%), indicating extreme variations intrastate even in the richest states. The southern parts of Bihar, Orissa and UP account for at least 55% of poverty levels, demonstrating that even within the poorer states, there are deep pre-existing variations.

Looking at governance per se, credible indicators are hard to obtain. Anecdotally, Chhattisgarh seems to be doing better than MP and Uttarakhand than UP, but we must remember that a Madhu Koda showed up in a new “small state” of Jharkhand and, by all accounts, is in the midst of enormous unaccounted wealth in the shortest possible period of time.

Outstanding research by Bibek Debroy and Laveesh Bhandari has shown the performance of 78 regions of India. Contrary to the exponents of a separate state, their research demonstrates that all regions except coastal Andhra have grown dramatically, and in relative terms, that of Telangana has been “most dynamic”. If this is correct, then it would negate the theory that Telangana has lagged behind in India’s post-reform period, and demonstrate that the richer coastal Andhra has been relatively growing the slowest.

The other aside, given the rapid deterioration of India in the Transparency International rankings, is whether the demand for smaller states is a guise for grabbing a larger share of a smaller kitty (as against a smaller share of a larger kitty) when it comes to rapacious rent-seeking by politicians—justified in the name of the “sentiments” of the people. There can be no end to primordial passions and one can justify on the ground of sentiment carving out of ever smaller states till such time that it becomes completely meaningless. All those giving the example of the US’ number of states should not forget that the states which are the economic dynamo of America are the larger ones such as California, New York, Texas, Illinois, and not Montana or Wyoming. Stellar research by Michael Porter at Harvard Business School indicates that within each country there are clusters—the US has at least 400—which are the engines propelling growth, and these are spread all across the US, not correlated to a big or small state.

Time and again, evidence suggests that the necessary sine qua non for rapid economic growth are sound policies which don’t hamper the market but work to support it—pre-existing conditions, a strong institutional framework, private investment across sectors, and sound human development indicators. The sufficient condition is perhaps the quality of leadership and other intangibles that we have not yet learnt how to measure accurately. I don’t know if the time is ripe to demand statehood for myself and my family, but going the way we are, that day doesn’t seem far away when I will be—along with a few others—demanding a separate state for Vadama Tamil Iyer Brahmins from North Arcot, which can be the surest recipe for economic regression for me!

Why are you even making a case for smaller states. Telangana fight is about neglect, looting, discrmination, mockery of culture ,self rule ,isnt it ? Or did all those arguments fail.(FYI Telangana will still be a big state if created)

To add ,opinion of THE Hindu Newspaper : The Hindu has argued editorially that a just and sustainable solution to the Telangana issue can be found within an undivided Andhra Pradesh.

  145. Ravindra,

The person that you quote can't construct a sentence without a landmine of fallacies.

With Global Leaders of Tomorrow such as these do the people of India need enemies?

Indian intelligentsia, pseudo-intellectuals and Global Leaders of Tomorrow such as esteemed Srivatsa Krishna are questioning small states - they offer no evidence against it, nor any evidence for a big state, but malign the case for a small state by posing several ill-formed questions, misrepresenting the position of the stakeholders, and use misleading cherry-picked numbers. I would like to highlight one such on livemint(WSJ) - "Do small states really make better ones?".

Most of this article will be geared towards Telangana, the intellectuals are coming out of the wood works to attach an implicit negative connotation to 'small state' after the recent news of a separate Telagana. This negative connotation must be fought fiercely, the aspirations, growth and development of vast areas and the people of Telangana, Vidarbha, Gorkha-land depend on the formation of states representing their interests.

Unfortunately, none of them offer a definition of a small state. They pose questions such as "Do small states really make better ones?" where a small state is not defined. I am amazed that entire articles and opinions can be written without clearly defining on what makes a state a small state. Additionally, the reader is supposed to assume that something is inherently wrong with small states (notice the use of word, 'really' and the question mark indicating that he doesn't believe so) - while no evidence against it is offered.

It is not beneath thse Global Leaders of Tomorrow to resort to underhanded tactics, making a caricature of 'small state', an appeal to ridicule, where the small state proponent's argument is taken to ridiculous extremes eg: "if the time is ripe to demand statehood for myself and my family".

".. which can be the surest recipe for economic regression for me!" And here an implicity assumption that small states leads to economic regression without offering any proof. (Begging the question, or petitio principii). An appeal to ridicule based on his own unproven assumption! Wow!

    What is a small state?
Small and large are comparison operators, linguistic equivalents of the arithmetic operators <,>. All comparisons are relative. Comparisons must be made between identical entities. For example, you can't compare a mammal and a rock, nor music and banana and a monument. These are NOT identical. There must be a defined Unit (meter,kilo,square-kilometers) and a way to measure it. Without a Unit and an instrument to measure, the comparison is meaningless.

    Now, on to Telangana.

    Is Telangana a small state?
Telangana has a population of 3.5 crore. This will be the 11th or 12th largest out of 36 states and UTs. All the UTs and these states are smaller than Telangana: Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Mizoram, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Goa, Chattisgarh, Jarkhand and Uttaranchal. If we look at geographic area, West Bengal and Kerala are smaller than Telangana.

Telangana with an area of 1,14,800 sq-km, will be 11th or 12th largest out of 36 states and UTs.

By population or by area, Telangana is clearly in the top 1/3rd of states.

Addressing the concern that "the states which are the economic dynamo of America are the larger ones such as California, New York, Texas, Illinois, and not Montana or Wyoming". This concern is a moot point, Telangana has the same population as that of California, the largest state (by population) in US. Also, the writer convenienty picks out US, while ignoring the largest states in India, which are also the poor. Nor can the author make similar claims of "large states are economic dynamos" if he looks at the largest states in Russia (to the east, Siberian) nor China (west of China).

    ReplyDelete
  146. (continued .. )

While making a case for large states using the states of US as an example (CA, NY, TX, etc), conveniently ignored that the largest states in India are also poorer (if not the poorest), from his own article: "five poorer states of Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Rajasthan, with 40% of India’s population, produce only 25% of the national output". Talk about cherry-picking!

  148. I'm just shocked that that guy Srivatsa Krishna is even allowed to write

He says "But does a Telangana being carved out of Andhra Pradesh (AP) automatically mean lesser transmission and distribution losses, and therefore, better electricity availability?"

A a straw man argument - a logical fallacy. Better electricity is made available due to better allocation of resources, which are currently being misallocated.

Another question you would ask is: Would Telangana guarantee a better crop yield? You may make similar straw man arguments, also category mistakes. The efficiencies that are to be developed by technology and innovation - you are attributing them to geographic political demarcation. These two solve different kinds of problems. Politicians and scientists/engineers work in different domains. The problems they address and the solutions they propose are different. Do not seek solutions for one domain in another.

I can make a case for Telangana in as many dimensions as I please. I can make a case of increased efficiency, feedback loops, organizational structure, engines of growth, macro regions, resource misallocation, economies of scale, cultural violence -- but none of these would be intelligible to you. Teaching you all these things is going to take quite some resources, if you have $40K, I can teach you all those.

Since you werent able to understand such a lengthy article ,i will simplify it for you pointwise.

Smaller state doesnt necessarily mean better goverance.

Costs will increase for both states because of duplication of jobs and resources.

What matters for people is quality of Government intervention .

Even in rich states there is a lot of economic unequality.
Even poor states are not uniformly poor

Research by Bibek Debroy and Laveesh Bhandari shows all regions except coastal Andhra have grown dramatically, and in relative terms, that of Telangana has been “most dynamic”.

Are small states a ploy by politicians to hide their corruptions and to create more jobs for them.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Hello Guys,
I am very saddened after seeing my own people fighting it out over senseless things. Surely the politicians have achieved what they wanted.

In my opinion " Separate Telangana" will be a reality. Even if you fight, cry, moan, rejoice or do anything it cannot be stopped. You people are not seeing the Ulterior motives of the Politicians at Center and state behind this.

YSR had died in an accident. There is no strong congress leader in the state. The central government and state government have been performing pathetically(look at the spiralling prices of essential commodities). With a strong opposition leader like Naidu, it cannot expect to be back in Power in 2014, and make Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister. AP being a state which provided maximum no.of MPs to central govt, it is essential to weaken CB Naidu.

This can only be done by splitting AP into 2. In telangana congress would get maximum seats by saying that they are the people who gave separate telangana(KCR would be looped into Congress), where as in Coastal districts and rayalaseema Naidu will be weakened by projecting him as the person who kept silent and didnt take any stand. Chiranjeevi would make considerable gains in this place and ultimately he will also support congress.

This i feel is the game plan. But Separate telangana wont be given so soon, this will be given 1 year before General Elections so that congress reaps maximum benefits. All this blogs, news channel coverage, media hype, telangana JAC, Dhoom and Dham will be sustained till that time so that common man is engaged in useless fights and forget that he is paying Rs.40/Kg for rice and Rs.110/kg of Dal.

Keep fighting, it is good for telugus, it will make us more competitive. after some years we have to fight for waters with Karnataka, Maharashtra; we will also have to fight with Tamilnadu for jobs (as there will be considerable loss of investment becoz of this turmoil)

  154. Ravindra,
Well a coherent data presented here but analysis is not what I say is relevant.
Well your data compares situation in USA and tries to apply it to the telangana. Well so far fetching it is it fails to recognize the confounders here.
USA is a large country by area but by population it is less than 1/3 of India. When 300 million people are organized in 50 states how would you compare it with a nation that has population of 1 billion organized into just 28 states and 7 UT?
More over the govt. of USA is 300 years old whereas India is just in its adolescence.
If you look at the states in USA definitely by population AP would be a very large state than any.
And, it is really frivolous not to consider the kind of economy that exists in both nations. India is largely based on agriculture where as USA is highly industrially developed. More than 80% of population in states you cited are concentrated in big cities.
I don't know how much knowledge you have in Americal political system but from first hand experience I clearly see a drastic difference in the governance between India and USA. In USA provincial powers, whether they may be city, town, county or state, are highly encourages rather than federalism. Here in India we haven't yet achieved that level of decentralization, rather I would say it is very little and that too is true with few states.
Where as district level governance(analogous to county) is still in infancy.
Formation of smaller states is the best way india can begin decentralizing the power.
In USA provincial govt. wields more power than federal in most affairs pertaining to the provinces.
In india this kind of decentralization is discouraged.
And political scientists irrevocably and unanimously agree that in a democratic nation of states decentralization of power is the best way to make people part of the state affairs. That is what Gandhiji meant when he said true freedom in India is achieved only through Gram Swarajya.
I do not know why the authors have missed such a trivial analysis.Instead they just analyze very superficially and wrongly comparing states in USA as equivalent to states in INDIA.
That is their major flaw in the analysis.
Well I also do not disregard their comparative analysis based on regions and subregion in Indian states.
But you have to clearly understand that when regions of a state are considered they overlooked the state of governance and political power distribution with in the states. They have completely failed to base their analysis including these very important confounding factors. They also fail to include or mention large states in India like UP and Bihar. This I feel is the reason for the bias.
Now coming to telangana and AP it is clear that they say both regions have developed very well according to Indian standards.
But they fail to notice the differences in trends of development in both regions. Whereas the growth and development in telangana is largely centered over hyderabad, it is not so in Andhra where there are more developed urban centres than rest of telangana.
    It is certainly skewed.
They also fail to mention that most of the expenses in telangana go to hyderabad whereas it is more uniform in the case of andhra.
These things they do not realize and have come to a conclusion very hastily which I think is critically questionable.
NOw coming to IDlers data it compares the newly formed smaller states with the rest of the states in India and as well as the states before separation.
It is more comparable with the situation of AP and telangana. The scenario also implicitly controls for the power sharing bias and administrative bias.
So I think Idler's data is more strong and apt in this scenario than yours.

Like we are not fighting now? Do you know that the three states are closely waiting for the Krishna water dispute tribunal's decision.
Telangana formation would dampen atleast some aspirations of karnataka and maharashtra because as a new state that is far behind in utilizing waters will be given sufficient leverage while imposing regulations on water usage by these two states.
And telangana can certainly buy time to imporve its conditions before a next dispute tribunal is constituted.
And the loss of investments due to turmoil, haven't you seen the news today?

Well, I still do not understand a bit of it why Ravindra's time factor would make any sense in supporting his arguments?
He had been asking for the time period required for the development of telangana if it separates.
I think he is still beating out his mind to understand his own question. Or may be googling to find data he thinks that will answer his question, which he eventually would be plannig to paste here in comments.

  160. Ravindra,
Looking at governance per se, credible indicators are hard to obtain.

Look how biased this statements are.
Well they agree that jharkhand is doing better but how come this 'Madhu koda' fits in here to show that smaller states cultivate corruption? Or to say smaller states are not desirable even though they show development?
A perfect straw man argument till date.

    (As an FYI,
isolated instances are not the basis of a scientific analysis rather they would only suffice a news report better.
This article definitely would have been dumped immediately in trash if ever sent to a peer-reviewed journal.)

And the most interesting part is, India today has produced an article saying "Small is beautiful" and certainly advocating small states.
And do you know who provided the data and the methodology for it?
    The same Bibek and Laveesh.

So what I mean here is that this article arguably uses questionable citations by falsely using contextomy and strawman arguments.

Contextomy- Citing a particular statement or paragraph of the entire analysis from a published article is to prove something that is in direct contradiction to the conclusions of orginal article.
Or partially highlighting a particular phrase in an article to prove something unrelated or in contradiction to the conclusion of original article.

    ReplyDelete
  164. all regions except coastal Andhra have grown dramatically, and in relative terms, that of Telangana has been “most dynamic”.

Well.. what they do not account for is coastal andhra is pretty feudal and has large land-holding and massive number of landless labourers.

Telangana has more cultivator density (less feudal), and most of the growth shown is because of investments made in borewells (each farmer spent a lakh or more just on borewells, many went bankrupt, distress sales, etc) while Andhra gets water from canals at a ridculously low price.

Sadly, groundwater is limited, no amount of investing in borewells is going to yield water while the coastal andhra keep looting telangana farmers of their water.

Whatever growth was there (I highly suspect any growth, the people that I know in 20 villages have become considerably pooer), was due to their own herculean efforts and it cant be sustained anymore.

Its people and students or the andhra people?

    ReplyDelete
  166. .. and coastal andhra most likely won't register any growth, coz the big farmers get richer, the landless labourers live on daily wage. The population density in costa is high, rich farmers would be few in number, so any stats would be skewed by majority of landless laborers.

It is rather sad that no one in Andhra is concerned about their poor, they only fight for exploitation rights for the rich and the privileged and the false prestige of owning some property in hyd (more dowry).

  175. @ Anand, Sravan, Idler,

80% of comments from our erstwhile andhra debators are along the lines of:

    1. Argument from ignorance
The two most common forms of the argument from ignorance, both fallacious, can be reduced to the following form:
*Something is currently unexplained or insufficiently understood or explained, so it is not (or must not be) true.
*Because there appears to be a lack of evidence for one hypothesis, another chosen hypothesis is therefore considered proven.

Our fellas keep asking for more and more of empirical, statistical and all other forms of data... while it is interesting that they quote invariably from nalamoddu's andhra-bible or from the below-standard-Op-Ed columns written by someone over coffee break!

    2. Negative Burden of Proof:
In short, X is not proven simply because "not X" cannot be proven.

Man, its so boring arguing with dim-wits!

The rest 20% of their comments are about personal attacks or to ask idler to shut up (their egos are terribly bruised by then!)

    Side effects:

    1. Sometimes, you may feel like killing yourself.
    2. You may be laughing for no reason just remembering what some andhra guy wrote on the blog.
    3. You may feel fatigued and so disgusted with the filth that your memory may chose to start dropping important things.

Please take adequate care to deal with this fatigue...

Personal attacks line of "reasoning" is plain wrong coz the attack is directed at the person making the claim and not the claim itself. We all know that the veracity of a claim needs to be proven false else it will hold true indefinitely

The higher the personal attacks, name calling, littering directed at a person on our blog = the greater are the facts presented by THAT person which our A* debators are failing to counter at

    This inturn results in

  187. Sujai,

Couple of comments on why some commenters are not coming back. I for one, havent come back as often because when I have a different point of view, its either assumed to be based on falsified information despite historical references or the abused and ridiculed for not being a supporter. By no means is it acceptance of defeat. There is no success or defeat when its a discussion. This is a blog only for separatists and by separatists. How in the name of rationality do you expect to convert atleast one person with your ideas is beyond me, especially when there is very little objective discussion going on.

As for language and culture being ridiculed, it appeals to people's sentiments to make such statements, but think of it this way. It is said that Urdu in its purest form is spoken in Lucknow and the rest of India speaks varied forms influenced by the surrounding regions. Now, by your principle, axe grinding must be going on by Muslims in the rest of India.
England supposedly speaks the best form of English and Britishers make fun of American and Australian English on television and in movies. Should America/Australia take offense and launch into a diatribe with England? Think about this for a second.. without thinking about how they are separate countries already or how they were British colonies before independence.

Variations in a single language exist everywhere and some forms are represented more in media (books and poetry)than others. There is also the aspect of languages used in formal documents and literature vs spoken language. Surely this does not mean that one form of language is inferior and the other is superior. It makes your blood boil to think that someone/something is looking down upon you and therefore you should rise up and revolt etc etc but, in reality this feeling of yours which is one of the main reasons for separation isn't serious or unique. This variation in languages is prevalent everywhere in the world and it is taken in a lighter vein.

Let me ask you this. Tomorrow if Telangana is a separate state, are you going to ask people to speak in one particular dialect only and ostracize those who have a different dialect? By the same principle of nativity, would someone from South Telangana be perceived to be different from North Telangana? How far back will you go before establishing someone as a pure Telanganite vs a "settler". What you are hoping for is a cultural monolith, which is at odds with the dynamic nature of the concept of culture.

Your comment about generalizing was very interesting too. You said that you have to generalize because you wouldn't get anywhere otherwise. Is this what one calls rational?

One of your own, Pothana who was born in Warangal, wrote this in Bhagavatam.

    శ్రీకైవల్వ పదంబు జేరుటకునై చింతించదన్ లోకర
    క్షైకారంభకు భక్తపాలన కళా సంరంభకున్ దానవో

What I think is what ever you posted is actual telugu I do not know the exact reason, but I thought the people at that time thought the actual telugu is difficult to talk in daily basis, so they started creating different versions of telugu for general daily usage. Thats the reason you see many variations in telugu like seema telugu, godavari telugu, andhra telugu and telangana telugu etc. At the British time Andhra telugu guys are able to manage the British and got approval that Andhra telugu can be used in school text books, news papers and other daily usage. Thats how it got standardized. But not because it is only the pure telugu. (Its funny that Andhra people think they talk pure telugu when they do not know the roots of telugu)

  190. Jai Telangana,

Hahaha. you are not too quick to note that Biryani itself is not Indian before you launch into attacking the commenter.

    Kiran Kamsetti,

Here we go again, Did I mention that Andhra Telugu is purer? Read first, understand what I said, then comment. Dont just go on your track.

" England supposedly speaks the best form of English and Britishers make fun of American and Australian English on television and in movies. Should America/Australia take offense and launch into a diatribe with England? "

The other way round holds equally true. British actors and actresses actually get rid of their british accent for the fear that american audience mock at them or dont receive them well. I've heard this fact numerous times while being interviewed from varied actors who pack their bags and fly to US for better opportunities(small to big). In fact brit accent is considered to be very incomprehensible even for an american. Its next only to Australian accent. Accent variations of any particular lang do exist and there's no denying about it but each hold respect in their own right.

There is a big difference between mocking for the fun of it (most examples that u quoted) and actually going to the extent of making somebody to forcefully change their accent (which andra guys are famous for) just bcoz they think its impure/uncool.

" Tomorrow if Telangana is a separate state, are you going to ask people to speak in one particular dialect only and ostracize those who have a different dialect? "

    - Why would we even do that ? We will not attempt to change anybody come what may. A person's identity includes his cultures, tradition, language and his own self. Making an effort to bring a change in any of the above is an insult to his/her identity as a whole

" By the same principle of nativity, would someone from South Telangana be perceived to be different from North Telangana? "

    - Assuming i can actually figure out that difference, they might be perceived to be different but that doesnt change my opinion on him/her. Are you confusing perception with opinion ? If he is good and does no harm to me how does it matter if he is from south or north telangana or even if he is from Pakistan or Afghanistan ?

Did I mention anywhere that you claimed the Andhra telugu is pure? I replied in general manner but I am not pointing at you.

As you said in your post
"Read first, understand what I said, then comment. Dont just go on your track."

  193. Jai Telangana,

Americans adore Brit accent which is why so many of their game shows have atleast one brit judge. And, how many times have you heard the dialogue in movies "oh my gosh, his accent is so cute" about Brit accent. You are wrong in assuming that they Americans do not like Brit accent.
In any case, nobody can forcefully make you do anything unless you want to do it. And dont start with the rape analogy. I dont understand this "forceful/deceitful ways of Andhras".
My best friend is from Telangana. We go about happily chatting in our dialects as two women are wont to. As far as I can remember, I have never had one iota of disrespect or ridicule for her, her culture or her family. This generalization sounds very uncool. If you cant figure out the differences in Telangana, you really need to learn a bit more. Some of your own again, have said this about the differences. Read up more at Kufr.blogspot.com

And, if you think that opinions are not based on perceptions, I dont know what I else I can tell you. Is your generalization of Andhra's based on your individual opinion of knowing Andhra's? How many of them? Maybe you will change your mind if you know me and my friends? Is it possible?

  194. Well said Fifth Element. Here's my take on this...

All Telugus are equal, but some are more equal than others :)

All the people of AP speak Telugu and for most part we all can comprehend each others accent. But there is always a dominant, suave variant of language, which most of literary works, art, media conform to. Nobody owns this. It is not true that this version is imposed by some government writ (as someone mentioned above). Even this version continuously evolves and overtime, it spreads and becomes colloquial. The accent spoken in parts of Krishna and Guntur might have more resemblance to this dominant version, but the dominant version evolves from all the accents.

There is a misconception that the language spoken in Krishna, Guntur is the purest form of Telugu. Do you think there is no rustic version of Telugu spoken in villages there? There are many variants everywhere based on caste, occupation urban/rural etc.

You guys accuse Andhras that we belittle you saying ours is prakruti and what is spoken in Telangana is vikruti. As if the word vikruti was coined specifically for Telanganaa accent. Prakruti - vikruti of Telugu used to exist in Telugu much before Nizam rule in today's Telangana. What educated and urbane speak is prakruti and a more rustic simple language vikruti.

Finally, does this mean everyone has to abandon their accents and try to speak the dominant or official tongue? Certainly not. One should be proud of their roots and origins. If you are proud of who you are, no one can offend you!

But the separatists (even the intelligent ones) want to cash on this because this applies to everyone in Telangana and can help in creating a rift among us. Why waste a good opportunity?

  195. Sujai,

" For Telanganas, it is all about mixing, evolving, and embracing new cultures and new influences without having to worry about impurities. We are proud of our biryani and our sakinaalu without having to think whether it is authentic Telugu or Hindu. We will continue to embrace others as long as they don’t impose themselves onto us. "

Where does embracing end and imposing begin? Is it possible you embraced another dialect of Telugu in all this fervor of yours to embrace new influences? Or are you just trying to appeal to other sections by trying this "we love Biryani because its a new and foreign influence but popu annam with one additional ingredient is a big NO NO. Because it is not foreign enough."

And, Sakinaalu is same as Chakkilalu. Its just a different name.

“ Americans adore Brit accent which is why so many of their game shows have atleast one brit judge. “

American television imported most of British program formats, from "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars" , "The Office" and a few others and hence they are very particular in having atleast one brit judge to maintain the authenticity.

“ You are wrong in assuming that they Americans do not like Brit accent. “

Did I say Americans don’t like or like brit English?? I just said everybody PREFER their own accent at the end of the day and nobody tries to impose on anybody just bcoz they think its cool

“how many times have you heard the dialogue in movies "oh my gosh, his accent is so cute" about Brit accent“

Do you even have the slightest idea as to how hard brit actors try to flatten out their accent in american television? There wouldn’t have been polls such as top 20 best American accents on TV by english actors/actresses otherwise. (Examples include Michelle Ryan, as the bionic woman, and Lina Headey as Sarah in "The Sarah Connor Chronicles"). Why not all brit actors speak in british if Americans are so fond of brit accent?? After all british english spoken by a britisher will sound nothing but cute as per your conclusions. The point I am trying to make here is it is an individual opinion if a language/accent/dialect etc sounds cute/great or pure. A language native to particular audience is always held dear to their heart and studio executives keep this in mind. Just bcoz some tom, dick and harry find something nice it won’t change the face of entire television history of a country.

“If you cant figure out the differences in Telangana, you really need to learn a bit more.“

You said differences between south and north telangana in ur prev comment which I still think don’t exist to a glaring extent. You post some random blogspot link and you expect me to brush up on my knowledge as if its equivalent to Encyclopedia or a research paper. Of course I can figure out little differences here and there within telangana, DISTRICT wise as far as usage is concerned but not the words themselves. For example me and my better-half are from adjacent T-districts of kmngr and wngl respectively and I can see stark difference sometimes in how he ends certain sentences (very few though) and I tease him all the time for that. There will always be variations to a language and you can never pigeon-hole it to a particular area. U can always tease somebody if you think he/she has a variation to what you speak but I repeat teasing/mocking in good humour is completely OK. You shouldn’t cross the line to an extent where you start ridiculing. Don’t tell me none of your folks have done that before. Just coz you’ve been nice to ur telangana friend doesn’t make your entire clan GOOD.

Let me ask you one thing – why would this question on ridiculing telangana accent even arise if there wasn’t any in first place? Remember, there will be no smoke without fire. Majority of us have experienced such instances in our life one time or the other and MAJORITY is what counts in any given situation.

“Is your generalization of Andhra's based on your individual opinion of knowing Andhra's? “

Ah, of course I’ve got my own tales to narrate. I’ve been in the exact same situation as you. I have a very close friend who is from A. We share everything literally but one thing she always made me realize was the fact that I had a bad accent variation of telugu and that I should change it no matter what. She always said this in the most serious of tone and not for fun. Not once but many times. How many people do you meet in your lifetime? How many close friends do you manage to have out of them….I am sure everybody can count on their finger-tips. Isnt one or two enough to make it apparent that there is an inherent flaw in how you people think?
