Telangana XXIX: Reporting from Hyderabad

Ground Zero: Osmania University Arts College

Osmania University symbolizes history of this region. It was the only university of this region before Independence built during Nizam regime. And today, the Arts College fountains and lawns with the historic façade of the building in the background become the Ground Zero for Telangana Movement. From here, the student body of all Telangana universities and colleges control and spearhead the movement. Every politician worth his salt has to prove himself on this hallowed ground. The elected leaders come here to get their fame and legitimacy. They need to be endorsed in this place so that they can be part of Telangana Movement. If they are rejected, like the way the students kicked a TDP MLA, Nagam Janardhana Reddy, then they are booed by the rest of Telangana.

Anyone who visits this place cannot help but feel charged. The atmosphere is electric. You visit this ground, see the students talking and educating the others on the plight of Telangana, hear them singing the ballads which is one of the hallmarks of Telangana culture, you cannot have any more doubts about formation of Telangana. It is bound to happen, and it is palpable here- the passion, the ardor, the optimism is in the air. Their fight will not go in vain.

Of course, it looks like a battleground, with shattered glasses, broken furniture on the ground, with Rapid Action Force battalions standing some distance away, with news channels permanently stationed with their vans topped by satellite dishes.

After I met the people who are carrying out this Movement on the battlefield, it is very clear that they don’t need further education on plight of Telangana. In fact, I stand in front of them to hear what they have to say. They give out facts, they have statistics, they have accounts of history on their lips. You don’t have to convince them. They are out there to convince you.

This is undoubtedly a people’s movement. Many people of Telangana, students, even a young boy whom I met in a different context seem to roll out statistics. It almost looks like every Telangana protestor knows what he is fighting for. They don’t talk about KCR or TRS. It is all about water, it is about jobs, it is about injustice, and it is about loss of self-respect, discrimination and marginalization.

Hitec City: IT Protests

Today, I have witnessed the commitment of the IT professionals of Telangana people. This was headed by Telangana IT Forum (TITF). Some of the members have resigned their jobs to dedicate themselves to this cause 100% of their time. The agitation was carried out in front of the Hitec City building in Hyderabad, the symbol of IT industry in this city.

Once the protests started, the media was there within the first few minutes. The agitators explained that they support separation of Telangana and professed their faith in a vibrant IT industry in the new state and dismissed the rumors of industry fleeing the city as mere blackmail. And within few minutes after that, the police arrived and arrested the protestors and herded them into the jeeps

Many policemen are however sympathizers of Telangana Movement. One of them explained that the whole process will take few hours and that there is nothing to worry. He added, ‘why should you worry? You are fighting for a just cause’.

The protestors did not stop chanting ‘Jai Telangana’ and singing the songs even inside the police custody. The media appeared again to interview the protestors inside the police compound. After 2-3 hours of custody during which the formalities were done, including the mug shots, the agitators were let go.

I was hoping that there would be much bigger show of strength. Some of the IT professionals explained that though there was much wider support for the cause not many of them showed up for the protests. Many of them are shy or afraid to admit they support a separate Telangana. They feel they will have to pay the price in IT industry during yearly valuations and increments if they disclose their support. I still believe that that there should no fear or embarrassment to show one’s support for a just cause.

Fun Protests

Many towns of Telangana have seen fun-filled protests. Some of them were playing cricket, some played kho-kho and kabaddi. Even women were playing these games. They were doing this on the streets and roads with loud cheering from everyone around them. Protestors occasionally launched into Telangana ballads and songs. I am happy to see this picnicking on the streets.

Please do not respond to any of the posts that people like Blueshift post. We are not here for winning ridiculous arguments. Neither do they know nor help us understand what they are trying to fight for. We have our goal ahead and lets fight for it. We've been reitarating since day one that our aim is not to fight against an innocent andhra/seema commoner who has done no harm and has been getting along with his life abiding laws. We have been trying to assert this time and again but this doesnt seem to get to their brains. While Sujai's post (current one) talks about the fact that we should rejoice and be proud of our ballads and our peaceful protests somebody from the other side is worried about cinema sets and sombody else talks about irrelavant lay offs...huh no point in wasting our time. Nobody is proposing or hellbent on destroying an iota of property or cause damage. They are pretty well aware of the fact that these are stray incidents and glorifying them is a part of escapism from reality all these anti-telanganaites have been resorting to for a quite a while now.

Lets keep our spirits high and see to it that we have telangana state formed by 2010.

    Jai Telangana Jai Jai Telangana

  6. I agree with the third post. This entire thing has taken this form because of the media and people (bloggers) with too much time on their hands.

People who are obsessed with their false identities have formed an opinion that Telangana must be formed no matter what.

The current poster himself asserts that their people have been dominated for 200 years - this itself is an indication of how much logic he employs. Underdevelopment is too complex to be pigeonholed into one core reason. But all this would be lost on these guys who are so insecure about their beliefs that they not only bristle at any hint of disagreement but have to constantly put a 'jai telangana' in all their posts.

  7. Sujai,

Take the families out, take the kids out, take the grandparents out, and walk the streets, holding peaceful rallies. Sing the songs of Telangana, our ballads that have inspired us and our movements. Enjoy the movement, hold festivities and picnics. Show your support through peaceful methods. And where necessary show it through non-cooperation, but ensure nobody or no property is harmed.
I think we are seeing something that you wished before.
And even i am getting new from my friends that steps are being taken in their colonies to stop any attacks based on prejudice.
They say nothing of the sorts have happened in their neighbourhood yet. But they said some incidents have come into light very much inside the city but not so much in the peripheries.

    Thoda-kottadam is injurious to sets!

Your Andhra/Seema heroes should follow the constitutionally approved Gandhian way of making movies - without any breast-beating, thigh-thumping.

  14. On a serious note, I must accept the mistake of having disregarded the history of telangana. Reading the article at (http://www.frontlineonnet.com/) pretty much convinced me that injustice was done to the people of Telangana. My contention all along was common man from andhra has nothing to do with the marginalisation of telangana people. He/she came for a livelihood to Hyderabad just like any other person from rest of the country. It was a combination of history , politicians to be blamed for the sorry state. I totally empathize with the plight of telangana people.

I agree with most of what he mentioned and I wish there were a few more leaders like him.

Any separation has to happen with a sense of fairness to all. We should not let it happen because KCR threatened with a fa(rce)st.

No more bandhs. Business should be back to normal and hopefully a political dialogue will start soon.

  16. Telangana will be eventually formed.
    This raises a bigger question:

Is linguistic basis of formation for states fundamentally flawed? How many states can India support?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Agreed that people are well aware of the 'statistics' and Telangana is still undeveloped....Did you happen to ask them how it is going to be any different having a separate state ? Did you ever ask stats about how many times the T legislators proposed any growth plans/proposed any bills in the assembly in the past 50 years? Considering the same leaders who didn't bring any good in the past remain the same in the future, how it is going to be any different? Beware..its all dirty politics...
Dont you think it would be easier to do agitation for the cause(development) instead of doing agitation for a separate state?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Chakri,
Did any of your politicians faced this question before separating from Madras State?

    ReplyDelete
  19. chakri:

Did you happen to ask them how it is going to be any different having a separate state ?

Look. How many people in India knew how it is going to be different in an Independent India (1947)? How many Andhras knew how it is going to be different in a new Andhra State (1953)? Most people were huddled into a new country or state without being asked how it is going to be different. And yet, we seem to celebrate those creations with great applause.

But when it comes to creation of Telangana, people ask, what about the future? As if all of us always have had answers for such questions.

And yet, many Telangana people already know what to expect from the new Telangana state. Even those who fight for it are anxious and some are even a bit apprehensive as to how our new politicians will go ahead and implement the projects that we are fighting for.

I have one thing to say: Telangana people are now more aware of what they want than any other population in India because of this movement. And that is a good start.

Did you ever ask stats about how many times the T legislators proposed any growth plans/proposed any bills in the assembly in the past 50 years?

Dear friend, thanks for your concern, but I have to admit it sounds hollow. Extremely hollow, I have to add.

I don’t need to ask anyone if they know the stats. If you had bothered to care for Telangana even a bit you would know how many times Telangana leaders failed to push a bill when it was proposed in the assembly. Just for a start, type GO 610, and look for the news items, and you will know how many times Telangana leaders raised the issue in the Assembly only to be drummed down.

Considering the same leaders who didn't bring any good in the past remain the same in the future, how it is going to be any different?

We believe and there are many facts to support this: our politicians however wile and cunning they are, have still tried to fight for people of Telangana but failed. The only reason they failed is because they comprised a minority in an assembly that was dominated by Andhra-Rayalaseema majority. In new state, there is no Andhra-Rayalaseema majority to suppress a minority.

It is going to be different, whether you like it or not.

    Beware..its all dirty politics...

And beware of all those give free but hollow advices.
And beware of all those who pretend to care.
Beware of all those who shed crocodile tears.

Dont you think it would be easier to do agitation for the cause(development) instead of doing agitation for a separate state?

    No.
That’s because sixty years of such agitation within a unified state didn’t show any results.

Dear AnonyMush brain, linguistic states is the best thing that happened to free India. No two ways about it.

  21. Anonymous:

I don’t think the linguistic basis for states was flawed. I think it was a wise move. But I think limiting ourselves to recognize only language as group identity to form states and thereby ignoring other group identities is flawed. India should recognize that there are more group identities than just languages. And some of them deserve statehood.

Some of them don’t. For example, a group identity called ‘sex’ doesn’t warrant a statehood because the populations of men and women are equally spread and do not have a geographical localization.

India can easily support 50-60 states in the immediate future. How will it be in 2050, I don’t know. But I believe if there is equitable distribution of wealth and opportunity, we may even see some grand alliances and unifications.

In retrospect everything looks easy. But in reality there was a major effort to get Madras for Andhra which subsequently failed. Even when Gujarat was separated, there were many protests to take Mumbai with them which subsequently failed. And yet, those events of the past look ‘easy’.

Now, the efforts of Andhras to take away Hyderabad will fail too. And hopefully it will set a precedent once again not to ask for foolish demands.

Are you supporting the Telangana State formation out of AP state without taking away the capital city of AP state??

If it is possible to do that I would have done it. If Kurnool or Vizag was a capital city, no Telangana person would have asked for it. Because then it would be a foolish demand [to ask Vizag for Telangana even if it is a capital city.]

Nowhere on the planet are all people completely aware of socio-politico-economic situation of their region/state/country. While some leaders seem to spearhead the movement, others tend to follow. Even during the height of Indian Independence movement not everyone understood what it meant to be free or independent. Most people usually understand only few catchwords and phrases and identify themselves with that not knowing the completely story or details of what it entails.

This kind of confused statements about the awareness of telangana movement among telangana people, gives the impression that this is a manufactured artificial movement rather than people's movement.

Ashok, you are free to assume anything you want. With such assumption we can almost characterize any movement on the planet as ‘artificial movement’ including those of French and Russian Revolution.

You are mistaken. Hyderabad can never be part of Telanagana with no strings attached. There will be definitely some sort of agreement on revenue.
You will be overconfident or naive to think that Hyderabad will be part of Telangana with no strings attached. And all I want is justice to everyone. If the strings to be attached is going to do justice to everyone, then it is well and good. But with no strings attached, there will be no separate state.
From your own example of A and B. If A insists on separation and B advises on staying united. If A keeps his stand then B will try to explain. If A still thinks separation is the right way then B will definitely want a part of joint property.
I bet you that, this is going to happen. That strings may not be revenue of Hyd. It could be a pie from Central Govt. But justice should be served.

    Peace. Development. Happiness.

  39. Sujai, You are mistaken. Hyderabad can never be part of Telanagana with no strings attached. There will be definitely some sort of agreement on revenue.

Well, I have no problem with that. Then, Telangana will also seek compensation for the losses it accrued because of the projects that were never implemented, the jobs that it lost, the water it had to forgo, the lands its accommodated for increasing Hyderabad size, and the energy it was not given. We can all sit across the table and come to agreements. I would like to see how Andhras are going to compensate Telangana people on all these fronts.

    ;-)

And all I want is justice to everyone. If the strings to be attached is going to do justice to everyone, then it is well and good. But with no strings attached, there will be no separate state.

No problem. I am all for justice to everyone.

If we have to talk, we have to talk about everything, not just Hyderabad. Hope you will agree to that since you see justice to everyone and want no strings attached.

What Andhra State will get from Center is of no consequence to Telangana.

I have read a lot of opinions, official and anonymous over this issue. Here are a few things that shock me:

    1. A few vested interests can create a staged drama of Samaikyandhra that the media (in their pockets) lionizes!

    2. Central govt. and Roshiahs govt. are SO FAR from the common man and his plight.

    3. A FEW LAKHS of people in a city believe that they can thrust their whims and fancies on 4 crores of population of Telangana. Elitists so far spaced from reality of crores of people whose taxes for GENERATIONS built Hyderabad.

    4. There is a saying in hindi... "Ulta chor kotwaal ko daante!". My writings have led people to attack me on many levels, not to leave out the fact that they hate being 'countered' by a woman. I've been called 'fascist, naxalite, maoist, hate-mongerer and hooligan' ... not to forget Mr. Ashok's comments.

    5. The pitiable CYNICISM in the elite circles of Hyderabad that fail to see what is going on.

I will be moving out of the city of Hyderabad.... It is no longer a democratic piece of land. It is dominated by the capitalists and elitists who for some reason believe that their life is A LOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN CRORES RIGHT OUTSIDE THE CITY. Hyderabad has been stabbed right in its heart... there is no scope for life here... only Zombies will be walking the streets in a few yrs!

Please don't use the mask of "woman" to gain sympathy and conveniently spread hatred by insulting all the people of hyderabad.

You are crying that people are attacking you -- I am sorry, but look at what you are doing " Insulting people of Hyderabad". 43. We insult Hyderabadis and at the same time, we want them to feel secure in the Telangana State. With these kind of negative views about our own people of Hyderabad, we are making things difficult for a political consensus.

We have to blame ourselves for our negativity and short-sightedness in our views on others. With minimum provocation, some telangana people get so depressed as if its the end of the world and then revolt with extreme negative views on others.

And in the end, continue cribbing why telangana state formation is getting delayed so much??

Answer lies in our negative approach.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Request to all my telangana friends:

When people are at the receiving end, they are very vulnerable for any propaganda manipulations. This is the situation of our telangana people. Main enemy of telangana people are our political leaders. These telangana leaders have been trading "telangana sentiment" for their own political careers (minister positions, chief minister position etc) from decades. So, when telangana people aimed their anger at these political leaders for their incompetence, these politicians conveniently diverted that anger using the strategy "blame all our ills on others".

This brainwashing of telangana people is very deep. If you want to find out yourself -- talk to even a highly educated professional, first he will sound broadminded but if you provoke him slightly, he will tell you "its all because of them". But if you ask him, what had our telangana leaders been doing for all these decades and what was their effort for safe-guarding our development?? This professional will be puzzled to find that he doesn't have an answer.

We should ask some tough questions for ourself before blaming others.

    Why was 1969 agitation failed??

Which politician traded 1969 agitation and what was the deal he got?

Aren't politicians responsible for putting the telangana agitation in the freezer after 1969 and used it for political benefits, till KCR came into picture??

Which politician has successfully used "telangana sentiment" for his political survival after being kicked out of TDP by CBN??

What was KCR's commitment to the development of Telangana before forming TRS?? Did he make any fasts/hunger strikes for telangana before forming TRS??

Did any telangana politician put any effort for a mass movement or agitation or like a YSR-style-padhayatra for the development/irrigation projects of telangana??

How can we trust these same politicians now and on what basis??

I agree with this and stopped posting long comments here and this is my last one.

"We insult Hyderabadis and at the same time, we want them to feel secure in the Telangana state."

I completely agree on this. Sujai and gang are sending wrong signals to Hyderabadis. They want to be Nizams of Hyderabad now and assume Hyderabadis are their subjects.

  47. Ashok and Blueshift,
tell your andhra firends not to instigate violence. Tell them to act friendly. You also do not take up any drastic steps man. Remember, your parents and family have some hopes on you. Do not break away. Try to think coherently. Do not loose yourself in paranoid delusions. Look at telngana students and people and how peacefully they are working to achieve a separate state. Nowadays andhra region is full of naxalites. No one knows who is naxalite, who is politician , who is student and who is a business man. So it is your responsibility man to help them get on right path. The right path is always non-violence. So do not force yourself with rest of others. Take non-violence as your agenda. I hope you will understand that the non-violent and peaceful approach of telangana people is not considered as weakness by your factionist friends.
So teach your andhra people what non-violence means. Do not take any step in haste that will keep you behind bars forever. So say no to violence and yes to peace. Deliver this peace message to all your andhra folks man. If one person like you will change others will follow you.

There can be an agreement to keep hyderabad as a UT for a period of time, till andhra develops its own capital.

-- It is no longer a democratic piece of land. It is dominated by the capitalists and elitists who for some reason believe that their life is A LOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN CRORES RIGHT OUTSIDE THE CITY--

Capitalists have been INTEGRAL to the economic development. Any society that had tried to suppress their growth has fallen flat into Poverty and Unrest. This not necessarily a bad thing. Case closed.

--Dear AnonyMush brain, linguistic states is the best thing that happened to free India. No two ways about it.--

Can you prove that lingustic states are the best? any critical argument in favour?

  51. Sujai,
I would like to see how Andhras are going to compensate Telangana people on all these fronts.
Of course that should be done! I am surprised that one of the politicians from rest of AP had in fact had the sanity to say that a report should be produced on all these matters.
Actually the people leading the Telangana movement should make such sane statements instead of statements like "Hyd should be UT" or that "If Hyd is not part of Telangana there will be blood bath".

    ReplyDelete
  52. Can you prove that lingustic states are the best? any critical argument in favour?

Like Sujai mentioned above, language is one of the primary identities every person can associate with. Every person in AP can understand a statement given by our CM. But if we were part of Madras presidency, such a communication would have been cumbersome and probably ineffective. Formation of linguistic states based on the major languages of that time helped our great and wonderful languages to flourish and expand.
Language invokes such passions that it was one of the rallying causes for separation from Pakistan in East Pak (Bangladesh).
Even in a developed nation like Belgium, there is a constant tussle going on between the French speaking and Dutch speaking populations.
I can keep going on, but I hope you get the point.

  54. Idiot Idler,
This is your Anus requesting you to stop passing pungent farts on this blog. Off all the supporters of Telangana, you are the only scum I have seen who cannot bear any counter arguments. You have zero receptiveness towards divergent views. This adamant attitude will give you nothing but brickbats. I am guessing you are residing somewhere in US and have not visited India lately. I am not sure if you ever have exercised your voting right. All you are doing here is barking like a rabies stricken vagabond. Sravan and Sujai always made sure the discussions were civil and decent unlike you.

I too was supporting united andhra, but changed my stand after reading the history of this movement. People of telangana have endured a lot of pain and injustice for the past 60 years silently and it is time for their voices to be heard. Politicians have used this issue as a tool for their political gains. Anyone who can view this issue without bias can easily see that there was utter disregard to the aspirations of Telangana people and they were ditched and exploited by politicians all along. Will a separate state solve the issue once and for all ? I have no idea. The path will be tough initially but I am sure things will settle down eventually and they will be on their own.

Having said this, I just cannot approve the posts of Idler. His method of attacking fellow posters who are trying to put their view points is totally condemnable. I have not seen even one single post where he tried to counter the arguments with any reasoning. All his posts last not more than 2-3 lines and filled with profanities and nothing else. I do not think he will change his way because he knows no other way. So why all this ramayanam... because Idler is a sob.

Dont be in a hurry to close this case! What Capitalism + politics can do is no less dangerous than what religion + politics can do.

When you end up paying close to 50K just to get admission for your kid, and ALL schools follow the practice... and policy makers make it a law, you will have no place to go and complain.... with media in the capitalists pockets... cops taking their orders from the industrialists...

My friend... think twice before you ask for something.

Capitalism sounds good only as long as you are on the right side of it.. i.e. born into middle-class and not in a hut!

  59. Dearest Vasu,

Glad to meet you! Hope you are enjoying the view down there!

That wasn't too hard was it? Posting with your own id. If you expect people to respond to your post, you must make it easy for them to identify your post. Address the tons of Anonymous comments becomes a challenge - when they are not straight question and answer, but take the form of a dialogue. You did not have the decency of respecting the Original Poster and others who may respond to your post.

Ah! regarding your counter arguments. Which new and innovative question did you ask, which was not asked before in the 25+ posts and a few thousand comments?

There are very few people who were targetted - Ashok, Pavan Reddy, Manohar. When did I reply to them? After how many of their comments? And are any of their comments new questions? I guess I'm forgetting Bhanu Prasad - the Andhra supremacist! How many of my replies were personal attacks? How many of my comments did you read? Once you gather these numbers -- you will have enough knowledge to answer your post.

How many of your brethren -- as Anonymous commentors and otherwise resorted to personal attacks on Sujai? The magnitude of personal attacks on Sujai is at least 30X of what I could have possibly perpetrated. Why don't you tell your brothers not to resort to personal attacks on Sujai? How come you don't find their behaviour objectionable?

Before you ask questions -- you need to do your research. You need to respect others TIME. Each post is gathering 100 comments on an average. And in case you haven't noticed -- it is just Sujai and Sravan responding. So, how many hours are they supposed to spend per day answering questions that are answered so many times?

I may respect you if you have learnt the basics on how to respect others and do not ask fallacy ridden questions.

May this Telangana nama Noothana Samvathsaram year give you some decent forum manners and the ability to pose the right questions. And of course, the right way. Here is a link for you:

  63. "O Great Manohar, Wisest of the Andhra Intelligentsia... pray explain why there are 10 Hindi speaking states in India?"

The sole criteria for division and unification of provinces was language as per the SRC. I said that was a good thing. I never mentioned anything about division/ unification of states based on any other model. Afaik, ALL of the states that were formed until 2000 used language as guiding principle (Except in cases where UTs were converted into states). Not much of unification based on language (Hindi) happened in North and Central India. But again its a misconception that Hindi is the sole language of so called Hindi belt. More than 50% of Biharis have mother tongue other than Hindi. Languages like Bhojpuri and Maithili are widely spoken. Likewise in Rajasthan.
You need to get your semantics right. But I am not going to provide you with any links to help you because I am sure you are smart enough to work your way through in the Internet.

  66. @SAVEAP,

This has been the principle followed by all the opposers of Telangana. Denounce, stigmatize and mock the leaders whoever take up the Telangana cause. As a proponent, it does not matter to me what the leader personally is, as long as he/she is working for the Telangana cause in a peaceful manner. Considering the scale of the movement, pressure from the police and the infiltration of destructive elements, I believe the students had done a very good job in running this movement so far with minimum untoward incidents.

If you are just another guy who despises any one talking for Telangana, I would not waste my time arguing with you. If you want to do some rational debate, I will be here.

  67. @ Lavanya

I will give my personal opinion to your question. Most of the Non Resident Telanganites have experienced the discrimination some point of their life. They have seen the pains of Telangana people and experienced it firsthand. Who ever is concerned, they will do their bit of help in their personal capabilities. I feel this is not a pre-requisite for them to express their opinions on Telangana. Government is responsible for the development of the people and the state. Please don't question the credibility of every one who is a proponent of Telangana state by picking up some attribute of the person.

There are adequate precedents for this one. Telangana will restore its pride the exact same way Andhra did, when they separated out of Madras state.

When I see the momentum being used by these politicians for their own good it makes me wonder, are we going to put ourselves in the hands of these so called, self appointed care takers,or do we have any body interested in future politics.WHAT IF?WE DO GET?WHAT NEXT?WHAT THEN? Any future leaders?I know of really bad incidents coming out, where people are abused and their property damaged.Peolpe are misusing the show of power for their own ends.PLEASE DO NOT USE VIOLENCE,FOR AN OFFENSE.OR ENCOURAGE IT FOR THAT MATTER.THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING US.

  77. Telangana is not regionalism, it can be called as concept/trend/lifestyle.
Anybody can be called Telangana, need not be born in that region.
Just follow the some basic principles.

Do not change with the changing trends and blame others for your weakness, drawbacks and failures in your life on somebody, so that you feel better at end of day and could sleep.
Try to eliminate competition to succeed in life.
To much bitterness you sow in your generations to come, do not teach them how to be positive and grow positive and rather teach how to blame others for your failures.

Then please do call your self “Telangana”.

But if you are hard working and think positive and you have changed according the changing world and you learned new skills as time changes and think positive and live loving life. And do not sow seeds of hatefulness in coming generations, then you are not "Telangana".

Even if you are from that region, please do not call yourself “Telangana”.
